How Custom Size Rug Pricing Works

How a custom size rug is priced to your size, how to work out the area, when a standard size is the better buy, and what to measure before you order.

The principle
A custom size rug is priced to your exact size. Each design that offers a custom size has a Custom size option on its product page: enter the width and length in feet and the total price for that size is shown straight away, before you add the rug to your bag.
Custom sizes run from 2 to 15 ft on each side.
A worked example
Say a room needs a rug 7 ft wide and 10 ft long, which is 70 square feet. Enter 7 and 10 and the product page shows the total for that rug. A rug 7.5 ft by 10 ft is 75 square feet, so the total rises in proportion to the area. There is no separate fee for choosing a custom size.
On a few designs the price per unit of area changes with the size of the rug, so the total does not always rise in a straight line. The total shown for your size is the price you pay.
When a standard size is the better buy
If one of the nine standard sizes, 2 x 3 ft to 12 x 15 ft, fits your room, compare its listed price with the total shown for your custom size. Where you enter exactly a standard size, the calculator uses the standard price. Choose custom when the standard sizes are clearly wrong for the space, not when they are a few centimetres off.
For the UK, EU and EEA, rugs are sold in custom size only, so enter the exact size you need. See ordering a rug to the UK or EU.
What to measure
Measure the room, then the furniture the rug relates to: the sofa, the bed, the table with chairs pulled out. Decide which furniture legs should rest on the rug, and size to that. Tape the outline on the floor before ordering. Our rug size guide gives the room-by-room rules.
Give us the room dimensions as well as the rug size when you order. If something looks off, we would rather tell you before the rug is woven.
What a custom size commits you to
A custom rug is woven to your dimensions after you order it, over an estimated production time of hand-knotted about 90 days, Oushak and handloom about 60 days, hand-tufted about 50 days, poufs about 45 days; other pieces usually a few weeks. Once it is on the loom it cannot be resized, so check your measurements twice. Read what made to order really means.
Converting metres to feet
The calculator takes feet, so if you measure in metres you will need to convert. One metre is about 3.28 feet. A space 2 m by 3 m is roughly 6.56 ft by 9.84 ft. Round to a sensible size rather than carrying many decimals, and enter the final width and length in the calculator; it shows the price before you commit.
Convert each side separately and then multiply. Converting the area directly is easy to get wrong.
Three examples of when custom makes sense
An alcove or bay window: a reading nook 5.5 ft wide that a 5 x 8 ft rug would overhang on both sides. A custom width fits the recess exactly.
A long, narrow living room: the sofa group needs a rug long enough for all front legs but narrow enough to leave a walkway. A standard size gives either the length or the width, not both.
Matching an existing rug: you already own a rug in one room and want a second one of the same size in another design. A custom size lets the two match.
Common mistakes
Measuring the room instead of the space the rug should cover. Measure the furniture group and the floor margin you want, then decide the rug size.
Swapping width and length. Write both down and check them against the room before entering them.
Rounding down. If you are between two sizes, the larger one usually looks better under furniture, as long as the floor margin remains.
Forgetting the shape. For a round or irregular rug, give the widest and longest measurements. See placing a round or irregular rug.
Before you confirm
Tape the exact size on the floor. Put the furniture back on it. Walk round it at the time of day you use the room. If it still looks right the next day, order it. A made-to-order rug cannot be resized once it is on the loom, so this one day is worth taking.
If you would like a second opinion, send the room dimensions and a photograph to living@raheemandson.com before you order.
Questions
How is a custom size rug priced?
To your exact size. Choose Custom size on the product page, enter the width and length in feet, and the total price for that size is shown before you add it to your bag.
What sizes can I order?
From 2 to 15 ft on each side, or one of nine standard sizes from 2 x 3 ft to 12 x 15 ft.
Is a custom size more expensive?
Not by formula. It is priced by area at the design's rate. Compare with the nearest standard size before you decide.
Do UK and EU orders have to be custom size?
Yes. Rugs for the UK, EU and EEA are made to the exact width and length you enter.
