How the store works

Made to order, to your size.

Nothing here sits in a warehouse. Every piece is woven after you ask for it, on the same looms at Bhadohi that have been running since 1927. That single fact shapes everything else on this page.

Hand-woven rugs in deep reds, laid one over another on a pale floor

There is no stock

A shop with a warehouse sells you something that already exists. If you send it back, it goes on the shelf and waits for the next buyer. That is how most shops work.

We do not have that shelf. When you order, wool is dyed for your piece, a loom is set with your dimensions, and a weaver spends days on it (hand-knotted about 90 days, Oushak and handloom about 60, hand-tufted about 50, poufs about 45; other pieces usually a few weeks). At the end of that there is exactly one rug in the world in your size, in your colours, and it is yours. There is nowhere to send it back to.

So every piece is made to order, and rugs for UK and EU delivery are made to the exact custom size you give us. We would rather say so plainly on a page you can find than bury it at the bottom of a checkout. This does not affect your statutory rights.

What we do instead

The effort a shop would normally spend on a warehouse, we spend before you order. That is the trade.

Samples of the actual yarn

Not a printed swatch. A piece of the real wool, dyed the real way, at the real density. Look at it on your own floor, in your own light, morning and evening.

Your size, not a standard one

Send us the room or the opening rather than a size from a list. Tape the outline on your floor and live with the tape for two days before you commit to it.

Any question, before you pay

How it will wear in a hallway, whether the colour works against your floor, what happens if a chair sits on it. Ask. We have made these for ninety-nine years and the answer is usually specific.

A fault service for rugs

Report a fault within 3 days of delivery and we collect the rug from you, repair it and send it back, and we pay the courier both ways. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Every piece is slightly different, and that is the point

No two handmade rugs are identical, and none is identical to its photograph. Colour shifts a little between dye batches. Dimensions move by roughly one to two per cent as the rug relaxes off the loom and again in the wash. A pattern edge is drawn by a hand rather than by a printer.

A machine can make a thousand rugs that match to the millimetre. That is a genuine achievement and it is a different object from this one. What you are buying here is the record of a person having made it, and the small irregularities are that record. Collectors of antique rugs look for them first.

None of it is a fault. If you want to know exactly what varies and by how much, we have written it out in full.

Where the line actually is

Variation is not the same as a fault, and we do not use one to excuse the other. A fault is a hole, a tear, a seam or binding coming apart, a stain that arrived with the rug, or a piece that is materially the wrong size or the wrong specification. Report a fault within 3 days of delivery and we collect the rug from you, repair it and send it back, and we pay the courier both ways. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Photograph it in daylight with something beside it for scale, and write to living@raheemandson.com with your order number.

Questions

Is every rug made to order?

Yes. Your rug did not exist before you ordered it, and rugs for UK and EU delivery are made to the exact custom size you give us. This is why we would rather spend the time before you order: samples, sizes taped out on your floor, and any question you want answered. This does not affect your statutory rights.

What if the rug that arrives is faulty?

That is different from variation. A hole, a tear, a failing binding, a stain that arrived with the rug, or a piece that is materially the wrong size or specification. Report a fault within 3 days of delivery and we collect the rug from you, repair it and send it back, and we pay the courier both ways. Photograph it in daylight and write to us with your order number. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Can I change my order after I place it?

Write to us as early as you can and we will tell you honestly where your piece has reached. Once the yarn is dyed and the rug is on the loom it has been made for you. This does not affect your statutory rights.

How different will my rug be from the photograph?

Close, and not identical. Expect a slight shift in depth of colour, about one to two per cent on each dimension, and some softness in the pattern edges. All three are properties of a rug made by hand.

Can I order a size that is not listed?

Yes, and most people do. Nothing is cut from a roll, so the size is a decision rather than a choice from a list. Send us the room, or the opening you need to fill.
