Hand-Knotted vs Hand-Tufted Rugs: How They Differ
Choosing · 23 October 2026 · 5 min · Published by Raheem & Son for RS Living
A hand-knotted rug has every knot tied by hand around the warp, so the pile is part of its foundation; a hand-tufted rug has yarn punched through a canvas and held by a latex coating under a backing cloth. Turn it over: knots show on the back of one, a cloth on the other. At RS LIVING hand-knotted takes longer to make and costs more.

The short answer
In a hand-knotted rug each knot of pile is tied by hand around the warp threads, so the pile is part of the foundation. In a hand-tufted rug yarn is punched through a stretched canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, and a latex coating under a second backing cloth holds it. Hand-knotted takes longer to make and, at RS LIVING, costs more for the same size.

Compared by stated criteria
Ordering, not ranking: the two are listed in the order the shop lists them, and judged against the same criteria. Lifespan is left out because none of our sources gives a figure we can stand behind; feel is left out because it depends on the yarn and pile, not the construction alone.
| Criterion | Hand-knotted | Hand-tufted |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Each knot tied by hand around (in the V&A's records) two warp threads | Yarn punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool |
| What holds the pile | The knots, locked by the weft | A latex coating on the back of the canvas, covered by a second backing cloth |
| The back | Rows of individual knots; the pattern reads through | A backing cloth that hides the pattern |

How to tell them apart
Turn a corner over in good light. Knots in rows, with the warp showing between them, point to hand-knotted; a smooth cloth over the back points to tufted. A hand-knotted fringe is the warp itself, not a strip sewn on. The V&A notes that machine knots also wrap two warps, so these checks are evidence, not proof. The full method is in how to tell if a rug is hand-knotted.
Which to choose
Choose hand-knotted for fine, detailed patterns and a rug whose pile is woven into its structure, if you can wait the longer production time. Choose hand-tufted for bold colour, fades and shaped outlines at a lower price and a shorter wait. Questions
What is the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs?
A hand-knotted rug has every knot tied by hand around the warp, so the pile is part of the foundation. A hand-tufted rug has yarn punched through a canvas with a hand-held tool, held by a latex coating under a backing cloth. Hand-knotted takes longer to make and costs more.
How can I tell a hand-tufted rug from a hand-knotted one?
Look at the back. Rows of knots with the pattern showing through suggest hand-knotted; a backing cloth hiding the pattern suggests tufted. Ask the seller to state the construction in writing.
How long do RS LIVING hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs take?
Estimated production time is about 90 days for hand-knotted (Oushak about 60 days) and about 50 days for hand-tufted. For international orders timelines are subject to change; we will email the confirmed delivery time and tracking details.
Does RS LIVING sell both?
Yes. RS LIVING, a Raheem & Son business, sells hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs, each made to order.
