Rug Pile Height: Low, Medium and High Pile Compared

Choosing · 23 October 2026 · 7 min · Published by Raheem & Son for RS Living

Pile height is the length of the fibres above a rug's foundation, not its total thickness. Two guides we read put low pile under 1/4 inch (about 6 mm), medium 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) to 1/2 inch (about 13 mm) and high above 1/2 inch (about 13 mm). Low pile is easier to vacuum and suits busy rooms; high pile is softer but holds more dirt.

The short answer

Pile height is the length of the fibres that stand above the rug's foundation. Hunker, a home guide, and Jaipur Rugs, a rug maker, both band it in inches the same way at the lower end: low pile under 1/4 inch (about 6 mm), medium 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) to 1/2 inch (about 13 mm), and high above 1/2 inch (about 13 mm). Low pile is easier to vacuum and holds up better in busy rooms; high pile is softer but traps more dirt.

The bands in inches and millimetres

Ordering, not ranking: from shortest to longest pile. The inch bands are the sources' own. The millimetre figures in our column are our conversions (1 inch = 25.4 mm), rounded to the nearest millimetre; Jaipur Rugs rounds the same bands down to 6 mm and 12 mm.

The two sources differ at the top. Hunker caps high pile at 3/4 inch and says taller rugs are often called plush or shag. Jaipur Rugs says only that high pile exceeds 1/2 inch, and gives two different shag figures on the same page (over 3/4 inch in one place, over 1 inch in another), so we state no shag threshold.

Hunker, updated 16 September 2021, and Jaipur Rugs, published 28 February 2026, each read on 23 October 2026. Exact conversions: 1/4 inch = 6.35 mm, 1/2 inch = 12.7 mm, 3/4 inch = 19.05 mm.

Pile height versus total thickness

They are different numbers. Both sources measure pile height from the foundation to the fibre tips and leave out the backing and any underlay. Jaipur Rugs adds that total thickness counts the pile plus the backing, and sometimes an attached cushion; its example is a rug with a 1/2 inch pile that measures about 0.7 inch overall. When a listing gives one figure, ask which it is.

How to measure pile height

This is the method as Jaipur Rugs describes it, in our words. Use something rigid: a ruler, a pile gauge or a caliper. Part the fibres and push the tool down until it touches the foundation. Read the height at the tip of the tallest fibres, without pressing the pile flat, and do not include underlay or a second backing. Measuring in two or three places on the same rug gives a fairer figure on a hand-finished surface.

Where RS LIVING rugs sit

Our flatweave rugs (15 designs) are woven flat on the loom, without a pile. For our hand-knotted (75), hand-tufted (46), handloom (17) and jute (64) designs, the catalogue does not state a pile height, so we do not place any of them in a band.

Every piece is made to order. For the pile height of a specific design, email living@raheemandson.com with its name and we will tell you what we can, or order a sample to feel it. Carved and mixed-height surfaces are explained in high-low and carved pile rugs.

Care by pile height

Whatever the height, vacuum regularly. The Carpet and Rug Institute advises vacuuming rugs towards the fringe with gentle suction, taking care not to catch the strands, and notes that regular vacuuming removes dust, dirt and allergens. Blot spills rather than rubbing. See the care guide.

Questions

What is pile height on a rug?

The length of the fibres standing above the rug's foundation, measured from where the knots or tufts start to the tips. It leaves out the backing and any underlay.

How many millimetres is a low pile rug?

Both our sources put low pile under 1/4 inch, which is 6 mm to the nearest millimetre (6.35 mm exactly). Jaipur Rugs rounds it to 6 mm.

Where does high pile start?

Above 1/2 inch, about 13 mm, in both our sources. Hunker treats 1/2 to 3/4 inch as high pile; Jaipur Rugs gives no upper limit.

Is pile height the same as rug thickness?

No. Total thickness adds the backing, and sometimes a cushion, to the pile. Ask a seller which figure a listing gives.

How do I measure the pile height of a rug I already own?

Push a rigid ruler or gauge down through the fibres to the foundation and read the height at the tallest tips without flattening them. Take two or three readings.

Which pile height is easiest to keep clean?

Low pile, according to Hunker: less dirt and pet hair is caught in the fibres. High pile is often harder to vacuum.

What pile height suits a dining room?

Jaipur Rugs, a rug maker, suggests low pile so chairs move without catching. That is the source's view, not a rule.

Is high pile a problem for allergies?

Hunker says high pile can trap allergens, a drawback for allergy sufferers. The Carpet and Rug Institute notes that regular vacuuming removes allergens.

What pile height are RS LIVING rugs?

Our flatweave rugs have no pile. The catalogue does not state a pile height for our hand-knotted, hand-tufted, handloom or jute designs, so email living@raheemandson.com with the design name or order a sample.

Can RS LIVING make a rug to a particular pile height?

Every piece is made to order, but we do not list pile height as an option. Email living@raheemandson.com with the design and the height you want, and we will tell you what is possible.
