What each construction is

The difference is how the surface is made. Hand-knotted: made by tying each knot of pile by hand on the loom. Hand-tufted: yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting gun, then backed and finished by hand. Handloom: woven on a hand-operated loom. Flatweave: woven flat on the loom, without a pile. Jute: woven from natural plant fibres such as jute.

On a hand-knotted rug the pile is part of the foundation. On a hand-tufted rug the back of the canvas is coated to hold the tufts and covered with a second backing cloth, as the Raheem & Son journal explains in hand-knotted vs tufted vs woven.

Where we state knot density on a hand-knotted design it is 100 knots per square inch (23 designs), 80 knots (13) or lower knot density (27). Our 12 Oushak designs carry no density claim. See how to tell if a rug is hand-knotted.

What each is made of

In the words on each product page, hand-knotted rugs are imported high-end wool, hand-tufted rugs imported high-end wool, flatweaves 100% wool and jute rugs 100% natural jute; 1 hand-knotted design, 1 hand-tufted design and 8 handloom designs are a wool and silk blend. Handloom rugs are wool or a wool and silk blend, as each product page states. Ask us at living@raheemandson.com before ordering if it matters to you.

Design counts by material are in the table above. The full list, including cushion covers and furniture, is in the materials guide.

Which construction suits a busy room

For a hallway or a family room our guides point to hand-knotted or a tight flatweave in a low pile, because both anchor the fibre firmly. A deep hand-tufted pile flattens along a walking line, and jute is hard-wearing but less forgiving of a wet spill. These are care recommendations, not tested durability ratings.

The UK and EU custom-size rule

Rugs delivered to the UK, the EU and the EEA are made to the exact width and length you enter, and standard sizes are not sold there. So only designs offered in a custom size can go to those countries: 217 of 217 today. Because each one is made to your specification, the statutory 14-day right to cancel does not apply to it once your order is accepted. This does not affect your other statutory rights, including those for faulty goods.

A hand-tufted rug has yarn punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting gun, then backed and finished by hand. At RS LIVING a 6 x 9 ft hand-knotted rug costs ₹45,198 to ₹99,900 and takes about 90 days; hand-tufted costs ₹28,080 to ₹52,920 and takes about 50 days.

How long does a hand-knotted rug take to make?

We estimate about 90 days of production for hand-knotted rugs and about 60 days for Oushak designs. It is an estimate, not a delivery promise. For international orders timelines are subject to change; we will email the confirmed delivery time and tracking details.
