Rug Sizes and Prices: All Nine Standard Sizes in Feet, Centimetres and Square Feet
Every RS LIVING rug comes in nine standard sizes, from 2 x 3 ft (61 x 91 cm) to 12 x 15 ft (366 x 457 cm), or a custom size. The most common living-room size, 8 x 10 ft (244 x 305 cm, 80 sq ft), costs ₹29,200 to ₹52,000 in jute and ₹66,960 to ₹1,48,000 hand-knotted.
The nine standard sizes
The nine sizes run from 2 x 3 ft to 12 x 15 ft. The table gives each in feet, in centimetres (rounded to the nearest centimetre), and as an area in square feet and square metres. Custom sizes are priced to your exact size, and area is the column to compare when two sizes look close.

Which size for a sofa, a bed, a dining table or a hallway
For most living rooms, a six-seat dining table or a queen or king bed, 8 x 10 ft is the usual size; 6 x 9 ft suits a small living room, four-seat dining or a double bed. Under a dining table, the rug should reach sixty to seventy-five centimetres beyond every edge so a chair stays on it when pulled out.
This is a summary of our rug size guide, which has plan drawings for each room. Hallway runners are made to the corridor: see choosing a hallway runner.
| Room or piece | Size to start from |
|---|---|
| Living room with a sofa | 6 x 9 ft for a small room; 8 x 10 ft for most; 9 x 12 ft with every leg on the rug; 10 x 14 ft for open-plan seating |
| Bed | 5 x 8 ft for a single; 6 x 9 ft for a double; 8 x 10 ft for a queen or king |
| Dining table | 6 x 9 ft for four seats; 8 x 10 ft for six; 10 x 14 ft for eight |
| Reading chair, nursery or small bedroom | 4 x 6 ft |
| Entry, kitchen counter or small landing | 3 x 5 ft |
| Doormat, bedside or in front of a basin | 2 x 3 ft |
| Hallway, stairs, alcove or round | A custom size, made to the space |
Is every design available in every size?
Yes for the standard sizes: all 250 of our 250 rug colourways list a price for all nine. A custom size is offered on 217 of 217 designs.
Round and irregular designs list the same nine sizes on their product pages; see placing a round or irregular rug.
The UK, the EU and the EEA: custom size only
Rugs delivered to the UK, the EU and the EEA are made to the exact width and length you enter, so standard sizes are not sold for those destinations. Treat the sizes on this page as a starting point and enter your own dimensions on the rug page. Because each rug is made to your specification, the statutory 14-day right to cancel does not apply to it once your order is accepted. This does not affect your other statutory rights, including those for faulty goods.
How close to the ordered size it will be
A handmade rug finishes within about one to two per cent of its ordered size, because it relaxes off the loom and moves again when washed. On a fixed opening such as an alcove or a stair, send us the opening rather than the rug size and we weave to the tight end of the tolerance.
