Hotel and Contract Rug Specification: Questions Answered
Specify the fire class the engineer requires for each space, choose the construction by traffic, fix every loose rug, dye a programme’s yarn in one lot, and hold attic stock. RS Contract samples in 25 to 35 days and starts bulk from 60 days, and arranges fire testing per order with the report supplied; no fire class is claimed in advance.

Where these answers come from
Each answer summarises one of our published contract resources or our stated ordering terms; follow the related links for the full reasoning. Fire standards are explained in rug fire ratings explained, and the per-space table is in which construction for which hotel space. This page is not a substitute for your fire engineer’s or building control’s requirements.

Questions
Frequently asked
Which fire standard should I specify for a hotel rug?
The one your project's fire engineer requires for that space and jurisdiction. In North America corridors and exits usually reference the radiant panel test ASTM E648 (NFPA 253); in Europe floor coverings are classified under EN 13501-1 (for example Bfl-s1 or Cfl-s1); in the UK BS 4790 may also appear. Confirm the class before the design is fixed.
Does RS Contract supply rugs with a fire certificate?
No fire class is claimed in advance. Our only standing affiliation is CEPC registration. We do not currently hold in-date third-party product certificates as standing documents. For qualifying orders and programmes, fire rating documentation (BS 4790, EN ISO 9239-1, NFPA 253) can be arranged or supported on request: we test a sample of your exact construction at an accredited laboratory and supply the report for your order.
Which construction suits which hotel space?
Hand-knotted wool suits lobbies, restaurants and principal corridors; hand-tufted suits guest rooms, suites and meeting rooms with lighter traffic; handloom suits large areas where volume matters; flatweave suits areas under furniture and lower-traffic zones. A sample confirms the choice.
Do contract rugs need an underlay?
Every loose-laid rug on a hard floor in a public building needs a slip-resistant underlay or an approved fixing. The building's fit-out specification decides which, so confirm it with the project engineer before ordering.
How is colour matched across phases of a rollout?
The reliable method is to dye all the yarn for the programme in one lot at the start and store it. Where that is not possible, seal a physical master standard held by both sides, set a numerical colour tolerance and illuminant, judge every lot against the master, and plan installation so phases do not meet.
How much attic stock should we hold?
Our guidance is five to ten per cent of the installed quantity of repeating pieces, with at least two of any design, and spare yarn with the full specification for unique pieces. Decide it at specification, not at handover.
How long do sampling and production take?
Sampling and strike-offs typically take 25 to 35 days, and bulk production starts from 60 days, depending on order size, construction and current production load. Fire testing, where required, comes before the production order, and shipping time is added on top.
Is there a minimum order for a contract project?
There is no fixed minimum order. It depends on product type, construction, material, size and customisation, and pricing is quoted to specification for each project.
What will RS Contract not claim?
We do not claim certificates we do not hold, a fire class before a test, or a delivery date the looms cannot meet. We name client projects only with permission. Raheem & Son's 2009 Four-Star Category Certificate is historic and is not presented as current.
