Wool vs Jute vs Wool-and-Silk Rugs: Feel, Wear, Water and Price
Choosing · 23 October 2026 · 7 min · Published by Raheem & Son for RS Living
Wool is the all-rounder: springy, forgiving and right for most rooms. Jute is coarse, strong and the least expensive in our range, but it absorbs water and stains when wet. Wool and silk adds a sheen and belongs in quieter rooms out of strong sun.

The three side by side
Choose wool for most rooms, jute for a natural look where nothing gets wet, and wool and silk for a sheen in a quiet room. The table sets out how each behaves, with the source for each point. At RS LIVING the wool rugs are imported high-end wool or 100% wool, the jute rugs 100% natural jute, and the shiny-looking rugs a wool-dominant wool and silk mix.
| Wool | Jute | Wool and silk blend | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underfoot | Soft and springy; recovers from crushing (Woolmark; our care guides) | Coarse and strong (RS LIVING glossary) | Wool body with the light of silk (RS LIVING glossary) |
| Wear | Springs back and hides small marks (Raheem & Son journal) | Strong and durable (Government of India, PIB) | Better in a lower-traffic room (our sheen guide) |
| Water and spills | Water-repellent, but loses strength when wet and may shrink and felt if laundered (UGA Extension) | High moisture absorption (PIB); absorbs water, softens and can stain when wet (our monsoon guide) | Silk water-spots and loses strength when wet (UGA Extension) |
| Sun | Strong direct sun fades every dye over time (our care guides) | Not rated by our sources | Silk is weakened by sunlight and yellows or fades with age (UGA Extension) |
| Cleaning | Blot, never rub; cool water; no chlorine bleach (CRI; UGA Extension) | Blot at once, dry quickly, never wash with water (our monsoon guide) | Spot clean gently; no chlorine bleach (UGA Extension) |
Underfoot feel
Wool is the softest of the three underfoot and has spring: the Woolmark Company, the wool industry body, attributes wool's elasticity and resilience to the structure of keratin, the protein it is made of. Jute is a coarse, strong plant fibre with a natural look. Wool and silk has the body of wool, with the silk adding light.
Wear and crushing
Wool recovers from crushing better than either of the others, so footprints and furniture marks fade rather than stay. The Government of India's jute brief describes jute as strong and durable, and our hallway guide calls it hard-wearing. Our sheen guide keeps wool and silk to lower-traffic rooms, such as a bedroom or sitting room, rather than a hallway.
Water, damp and spills
Jute is the one to keep dry. It absorbs water readily, softens and can stain when wet, so blot spills at once and never wash a jute rug with water. Wool repels a spill for a moment, which gives you time to blot, but it weakens when wet and can felt if scrubbed or washed hot. Silk water-spots, so wool and silk needs the same speed and a lighter hand.
Our monsoon care guide covers drying a wet rug and when to roll one up.
Sun
Keep wool and silk out of strong direct sun: UGA Extension's fibre guide says silk is weakened by sunlight and yellows or fades with age. Any dyed rug fades in strong sun over time, so rotate a rug that sits under a window. Our sources do not rate jute in sunlight.
Pets and children
Wool is the forgiving choice: a spill sits on the surface briefly before soaking in, and the fibre recovers from crushing. Keep jute away from where an animal might have an accident, because liquid soaks in and can stain. Wool and silk belongs in a room that children and animals do not run through. See rugs for homes with pets.
Cleaning
For all three, act fast and blot rather than scrub: the Carpet and Rug Institute advises blotting with a dry white cloth or plain white paper towel and warns that scrubbing frays and changes the texture. UGA Extension notes that both wool and silk are damaged by chlorine bleach. For anything beyond a spot, use a specialist rug cleaner. Full guidance is on care and cleaning.
What a 6 x 9 ft rug costs in our range
Jute costs least in our range: a 6 x 9 ft jute rug is ₹19,710 to ₹35,100; wool rugs run ₹21,099 to ₹99,900 depending on construction; our 10 wool and silk designs run ₹37,800 to ₹94,500. Fibre is only half the price: construction moves it more, as rug constructions compared shows.
| Fibre | Constructions | Designs | Price, 6 x 9 ft | Median |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wool | hand-knotted, hand-tufted, handloom, flatweave | 143 | ₹21,099 to ₹99,900 | ₹45,198 |
| Jute | jute | 64 | ₹19,710 to ₹35,100 | ₹24,300 |
| Wool and silk blend | hand-knotted, hand-tufted, handloom | 10 | ₹37,800 to ₹94,500 | ₹37,800 |
Where wool and silk should not go
Not in a hallway or by an outside door, where traffic and grit are heaviest, and not in strong direct sun. Put it where it is looked at more than walked on: a bedroom or a sitting room. Read where to put a rug with a sheen.

Questions
Is a wool or a jute rug better?
Wool for most rooms: it is softer, recovers from crushing and forgives a spill if you blot quickly. Jute suits a dry room where you want a coarse, natural texture, and it costs less in our range, but it absorbs water and can stain when wet.
Can a jute rug get wet?
Keep it dry. Jute absorbs water, softens and can stain when wet. Blot spills at once, dry the spot quickly and never wash a jute rug with water.
Is a wool and silk rug durable?
It is best in a lower-traffic room such as a bedroom or sitting room, out of strong direct sun. Silk is weakened by sunlight and water-spots, according to UGA Cooperative Extension's fibre guide.
Which RS LIVING rugs are wool and silk?
The rugs that look shiny are a wool-dominant wool and silk mix. 10 rug designs state it on the product page today.
