Wholesale rugs compared: China, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Turkey

The sources we could verify describe India as the largest handmade carpet producer and exporter by value and volume1,2 and name Iran, China and Nepal as the other key players, with Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan as smaller ones.3 No current primary source gives per-country shares of handmade exports, so the five countries are listed alphabetically and not ranked. Raheem & Son is an Indian manufacturer-exporter.

What the sources say

Ordering rule. Countries are listed alphabetically by name. This is an ordering, not a ranking. Each cell repeats only what the cited source says; where we found nothing, no claim is made.

Statements from the cited sources, listed alphabetically by country; an ordering, not a ranking.
CountryHow the 2017 trade report describes itOther sourced statements
ChinaA key player; the report adds that China’s carpets are mostly machine-made.3No further statement made.
IndiaA key player, with a reported 40 per cent share of the world handmade rug market (the report cites a media report).3Described as first in the world for handmade carpet production and exports by value and volume (IBEF, citing the Office of the Textile Commissioner; CEPC).1,2 Annual figures: India’s carpet exports.
NepalA key player.3No further statement made.

TurkeyOne of the other players.3We found no current primary source on Turkish handmade rug exports and make no further claim.

Customs categories mix hand-knotted, hand-woven, hand-tufted and machine-made rugs, so a single export number can mislead. For India, our export statistics page splits the government figures by HS line; for any other country, check UN Comtrade or its national statistics office for the specific tariff line.

Questions that work in any country

Ask where the rug is woven, ask for the exporter’s registration and tax numbers, ask for a live video at the loom, and ask for a written size tolerance. Our buyer’s checklist turns these into a list you can copy. If you are sourcing from India, see how to order, the sample programme and bulk quote.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which country should I choose for wholesale handmade rugs?

It depends on the order; we do not rank countries. A 2017 Fibre2Fashion report names India, Iran, China and Nepal as the key players in the carpet trade and Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan as other players. Product type, price, lead time and the individual supplier matter more than the country alone.

What share of world handmade carpet exports does India have?

We found no current primary dataset that measures it. The India Brand Equity Foundation (October 2026) and the Carpet Export Promotion Council both describe India as first in the world for handmade carpets by value and volume. A 40 per cent share appears in a 2017 Fibre2Fashion report that attributes it to a media report, so treat it as a reported figure, not a measured one.

Why does this page not order the countries by size?

Customs data does not separate handmade from machine-made rugs in every line, and the only per-country shares we found come from a 2017 news report. Ordering by size on that basis would be a guess, so the countries are listed alphabetically.

What does Raheem & Son offer a wholesale buyer from India?

Raheem & Son is a Bhadohi manufacturer-exporter founded in 1927 with no fixed minimum order, samples in 25 to 35 days and bulk production from about 60 days after sample approval, priced to specification. These are our own stated terms.

Can Raheem & Son tell me about Turkish or Chinese suppliers?

We make no claims about suppliers in other countries beyond what the cited reports say. Ask any supplier, in any country, for registration documents and a video call at the production site.
