Bhadohi is a district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, about 40 km from Varanasi. Together with Mirzapur and the villages between them it forms the largest handmade carpet cluster in the world, and the origin of the great majority of India's handmade carpet exports. If you are buying handmade Indian rugs, there is a strong chance they were woven within an hour of this town, whichever name is on the label.

Our forefathers were among the founding members of the All India Carpet Trade Fair Committee in Varanasi, whose work led to the formation of the Carpet Export Promotion Council in 1982. We are a CEPC-registered export house, and we weave, dye, wash and finish within this belt rather than buying finished goods and reselling them.

Bhadohi sits in eastern Uttar Pradesh, roughly 40 km from Varanasi, at the centre of a weaving belt that runs through Mirzapur, Khamaria and the surrounding villages. It is widely referred to as India's carpet city, and the density of handmade carpet skill in this belt is not matched anywhere else. That density is the reason a buyer can specify a construction here and find weavers who have made it for generations.
Weaving happens in villages, not on a factory floor
Hand-knotting and handloom work is done on looms in weavers' own villages across the belt. Dyeing, washing, clipping, binding and finishing are centralised. This is why capacity in Bhadohi is described as a loom network rather than a single plant, and why a serious house is measured by the size and stability of the network it can call on.
Everything a rug needs is within reach
Yarn spinning, dyeing houses, washing plants, finishing units and packing all sit inside the same belt. A colour correction does not mean shipping material across the country. It is the practical reason Bhadohi holds sampling lead times that other origins struggle to match.
Export infrastructure is established
The cluster has shipped to Europe and North America for decades. Documentation, inspection, container consolidation and inland movement to Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Kolkata are routine here rather than exceptional, which is what makes a first order from Bhadohi less risky than it might appear from a distance.

Six questions worth asking any Bhadohi carpet company
These apply to us as much as to anyone else here. If a supplier cannot answer them straightforwardly, that is itself the answer.
Are they the maker, or an agent?
Bhadohi has a large trading layer sitting between buyers and looms. An agent quotes, then places your order somewhere you never see. A manufacturer owns the looms, the dyeing and the finishing, so quality problems have one address. Ask who owns the looms your order will run on, and ask to see them.
Can they show you the process, not just the product?
Finished rugs look similar across the cluster. Wool sourcing, dye lots, knot density, washing and finishing are where quality separates. A maker who can walk you through each stage, in person or on a call, is describing their own operation. One who cannot is describing someone else's.
Is the export documentation their own?
Ask whether they hold their own CEPC registration and export code, or ship under someone else's. It determines who is accountable for your documentation, your Incoterms and your Certificate of Origin.
What happens when a sample is wrong?
It will happen at least once. What matters is the correction cycle. Ask how long a re-sample takes and who pays for it. A maker with in-house sampling turns a correction in weeks. One dependent on third parties takes months.
Will they take your volume, both directions?
Some houses will not touch anything under a container. Others cannot scale past a few hundred pieces. Ask about both the floor and the ceiling, because a supplier who can do a designer's one-off and a hotel group's repeat programme is one relationship instead of two.
How long have they been doing it?
The Bhadohi cluster turns over. Longevity is a reasonable proxy for whether a house survives bad seasons without cutting quality or disappearing mid-order. Ask for the founding year and for buyers who have stayed.
