India's Carpet Exports, 2019-20 to 2024-25: What the Government Figures Show

India exported US$ 2,097.72 million of carpets and other textile floor coverings (HS 57) in 2024-25, up 11.8% on 2023-24, against US$ 1,666.16 million in 2019-20.1,2 The United States took 58.6%. Exports by year

Chapter 57 exports moved between US$ 1,666.16 million and US$ 2,232.99million a year from 2019-20 to 2025-26, peaking in 2021-22. The table gives each Indian financial year (April to March) in US dollars and rupees, as the Department of Commerce’s TradeStat database reports them.1,2CEPC’s own export tables, built from the same Department of Commerce data, agree for 2019-20 to 2021-22 to within a few hundredths of a million dollars, the size of a later revision.3

The 2023-24 row needs care. TradeStat’s “Commodity Wise” report gives 2023-24 at exactly twice the value its “Commodity-wise All Countries” report gives for the same year, on every line we checked. We use the country-wise figure, which fits the years either side and UN Comtrade’s calendar-year series below, and we show the other one in the note rather than hide it.

Exports by HS line: 5701, 5702 and 5703

In 2024-25, knotted carpets (5701) were 14.7% of chapter 57 exports, woven carpets (5702) 34.5% and tufted carpets (5703) 36.7%; the rest is felt and other floor coverings (5704 and 5705). Hand-knotted rugs fall under 5701, flatweaves and kelems under 5702, and hand-tufted rugs under 5703, but each line also holds machine-made goods.

US import duties on Indian goods changed more than once in 2025 and 2026: IBEF reports a cut in the US tariff on Indian carpets from 50 per cent to around 18 per cent,4 and from 24 July 2026 a 10 per cent Section 301 duty applies to most goods of Indian origin.5 Read year-on-year changes in the US figure with that in mind. For the duty that applies today, see our guide to import duty on HS 5701, 5702 and 5703, which links each official tariff database. Nothing on this page is customs advice.

The same trade in UN Comtrade (calendar years)

UN Comtrade publishes India’s own reported exports by calendar year. Its totals differ from the financial-year figures because the twelve months differ, but they move in the same range, and they show no doubling in 2023.6

The 'about 40 per cent' claim and its basis

The figure of about 40 per cent of world handmade carpet exports is widely repeated, but we could not trace it to a primary dataset. The India Brand Equity Foundation’s carpet page, last updated October 2026, gives no percentage: it describes India as first in the world for handmade carpet production and exports by value and volume, citing the Office of the Textile Commissioner.4 CEPC says the same in its industry overview.7 A 2017 Fibre2Fashion report states a 40 per cent share of the world handmade rug market and attributes it to a media report.8 Treat 40 per cent as a reported figure, not a measured one.

Limits of the data

  • Chapter 57 covers all carpets and textile floor coverings, including machine-made ones. No HS line is purely handmade.
  • Indian financial years (April to March) and calendar years give different totals for the same trade.
  • Figures are revised. TradeStat’s reports are dated the day they are queried; these were queried 22 October 2026.
  • One TradeStat report shows 2023-24 at double the value of another; we use the consistent figure and show both.
  • Rupee and dollar series move differently because of the exchange rate.
  • None of these figures says anything about any single exporter, including us.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much carpet does India export a year?

India's exports under HS chapter 57 (carpets and other textile floor coverings) were US$ 2,097.72 million (Rs 17,743.68 crore) in 2024-25 and US$ 1,974.26 million in 2025-26, according to the Department of Commerce's TradeStat database, queried 22 October 2026. Chapter 57 includes machine-made floor coverings as well as handmade ones.

Which countries buy the most Indian carpets?

The United States, by a wide margin: US$ 1,229.51 million, or 58.6% of India's chapter 57 exports in 2024-25, and 55.6% in 2025-26. Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia follow, each with roughly four to six per cent.

What do HS codes 5701, 5702 and 5703 cover?

5701 is knotted carpets (the line hand-knotted rugs fall under), 5702 is woven carpets that are not tufted or flocked (including kelem and other hand-woven flatweaves), and 5703 is tufted carpets. Each line mixes handmade and machine-made goods to some degree, so none is a pure measure of handmade rugs.

Does India export 40 per cent of the world's handmade carpets?

We could not find a primary dataset for that figure. A 2017 Fibre2Fashion report gives a 40 per cent share and attributes it to a media report. IBEF (October 2026) and CEPC describe India as first in the world for handmade carpets by value and volume but give no percentage. Customs data cannot separate handmade from machine-made on every line, so the share cannot be computed from it.

Why do different sources give different export totals?

Sources use different years (Indian financial years run April to March; UN Comtrade uses calendar years), different scopes (all of chapter 57, or handmade carpets only), different currencies and different revision dates. One Department of Commerce report also shows 2023-24 at exactly double the figure in another; we flag it rather than use it.
