Care & Cleaning
Looked after well, a hand-made rug only grows more beautiful with age. A simple guide to keeping yours at its best for generations.

Everyday maintenance
Vacuum gently and regularly, without a beater bar, to lift grit before it settles into the pile. A light shedding of loose fibre is normal for the first months of a new hand-made rug and will ease with time. A professional clean every few years keeps colour and pile at their best.
Abrash, living colour
Subtle bands of tonal variation, known as abrash, occur naturally when wool is dyed in small hand-mixed batches. It is not a flaw but a signature of authentic, hand-dyed craft, the mark of a rug made by people, not machines.
Light & fading
Strong, direct sunlight will gradually soften any natural dye. Rotate your rug end-to-end once or twice a year so it wears and lightens evenly, and consider sheer protection for south-facing rooms.
Moths
Wool is a natural fibre and can attract moths if left undisturbed. Regular use, vacuuming and the occasional airing are the best prevention. Lift and check rugs that sit under heavy furniture or in low-traffic corners.
Spills & stains
Act quickly. Blot, never rub, from the outside inward with a clean, dry cloth. For most spills, cool water is enough; avoid harsh detergents. For wine, grease or oil, blot first and call a specialist rather than risk the dye.
Fluffing & vacuuming
To protect the pile, vacuum in the direction of the nap and avoid running over fringes. A gentle hand-fluff revives flattened areas under furniture.
Loose threads & sprouts
An occasional raised tuft or loose thread is normal. Never pull it, simply trim it level with the pile using sharp scissors, and it will disappear into the weave.
Care by material
Wool
Resilient and forgiving. Vacuum regularly; clean spills with cool water and blot dry.
Silk
Delicate and lustrous. Keep out of high traffic; entrust cleaning to a rug specialist only.
Bamboo silk
Soft with a beautiful sheen. Blot spills immediately and avoid over-wetting.
Cotton & jute
Hard-wearing naturals. Vacuum both sides; spot-clean and dry flat, away from damp.
