How this list is ordered, and who published it
Published by Raheem & Son, which is included. We say so up front because it matters: you should weigh what follows knowing the author is one of the companies named.
The one ordering criterion used here is the year established, as each company states it on its own website, oldest first. Nothing else affects position.
This is an ordering, not a ranking, and it is not an endorsement of quality, price or service. Position in the list tells you nothing about which supplier is better for your order. We chose the criterion before building the list and we did not change it afterwards: if it had placed Raheem & Son last, we would be last. We do not use scores, stars, "best" or "top" labels anywhere in this series.
A company is included only if its own public website shows that it makes or sells handloom or hand-loomed rugs. Each entry cites the page we relied on, and anything a company does not state is shown as "not publicly stated" rather than guessed. Last verified: 18 October 2026. Pages change, so if you spot a fact that is out of date, tell us and we will correct it. Sharda Exports describes hand weaving on manual looms, but uses the terms Hand Woven and Pit Loom rather than handloom, so we have not listed it here; it appears in the flatweave guide.
What handloom means in rug making
In rug making, a handloom rug is woven on a hand-operated loom where the weaver controls the shuttle and the beat of each pass, and the pile is formed during weaving rather than tied knot by knot. The result is a dense, even surface, usually in a looped or cut texture, and a look that sits between a knotted and a flatwoven rug. In our own range it is positioned as the route to a knotted look at lower cost.
The word is used differently across the trade. Some makers use handloom for a pile rug woven on a hand loom, some for any rug woven on a non-powered loom including flatweaves and dhurries, and some for a construction that combines hand and machine steps. The consequence for a buyer is simple: do not rely on the label. Ask what the loom is, who operates it, what the weave structure is and whether any step is machine-driven.
Handloom rugs lend themselves to plain, tonal and textured designs, which is why they appear so often in hotel and residential programmes where a quiet floor is wanted. They can be woven in wool, cotton, jute and viscose, and each fibre changes how the rug wears, so material is the second question after construction.

Six companies, listed by year established
Each company below uses handloom, hand loom or hand loomed on its own site. The labels vary, which is itself a reason to ask for a definition from each supplier.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Obeetee | 1920 | Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh | Handloom as a construction menu item. | page |

| Qaaleen | 1954 (earliest dated milestone on its about page) | Bhadohi roots, Delhi showroom | A Hand Loom collection under its Weaving Type menu. | page |

Where Raheem & Son appears, and what we state about handloom rugs
Under this criterion Raheem & Son falls second of 6, because 1927 is where the sequence of stated founding years puts it. That is a consequence of the ordering rule, not a claim about quality.
Our handloom rugs are woven across the Bhadohi to Mirzapur belt and offered in a range of tonal colourways in the handloom collection. Our weaving page describes handloom as the way to a knotted look at lower cost, and we explain how it compares with hand-knotted, hand-woven, hand-tufted and flatweave on the weaving techniques page. Colour matching, dye-lot control and finishing are covered on manufacturing.
Raheem & Son has no fixed minimum order, quotes a sample or strike-off in 25 to 35 days, and starts bulk production from about 60 days depending on order size, construction and production load (see how to order).
On certification, CEPC registration is the only credential we currently hold. A Four-Star Category Certificate from the Directorate of Industries, Government of Uttar Pradesh was awarded in 2009; it is a historic award that lapsed in 2011, not a current certificate. We do not hold other standing third-party certificates; others are arranged against qualifying orders and we say so in writing first. See our standards.

Checks before ordering handloom in volume
Ask for the loom type and the weave structure in writing. Ask for yarn count and pile height, since these decide weight and feel, and for a physical sample in the exact colourway, because tonal rugs show dye-lot variation more than patterned ones. For a project spread across phases, ask how the supplier controls dye lots and whether it will hold reference swatches for replacement orders; our hospitality guide covers the process.
To see how this construction sits against others, continue with the guides to hand-knotted and flatweave and dhurrie makers, or the series overview.
Frequently asked
Which Indian companies make handloom rugs?
This guide lists six whose own sites show handloom or hand-loomed rugs: Obeetee, Raheem & Son, Qaaleen, Jaipur Rugs, Saraswati Global and PiHue Creations, ordered by the year each states it was established. It is an ordering, not a ranking.
What is the difference between handloom and hand-knotted?
Hand-knotted rugs are built by tying individual knots onto the warp. Handloom rugs are woven on a hand-operated loom with the pile formed during weaving. Raheem & Son positions handloom as a way to a knotted look at lower cost; terminology varies between makers, so ask each for a definition.
Can handloom rugs be made in custom colours?
Raheem & Son produces to approved design and colour specifications, with samples in 25 to 35 days and bulk production from about 60 days depending on order size and production load.
Is the order of this list a quality ranking?
No. It is ordered only by the year each company states it was established. Raheem & Son published it and is included; position says nothing about quality.
