A craftsperson uses a tufting gun to push yarn through a backing canvas, which is then secured with latex and covered with a secondary backing. How is a hand-tufted rug made?
A hand-tufted rug is made by pushing yarn through a stretched canvas using a handheld tufting gun. The craftsperson follows a printed or projected pattern, building up the pile row by row. Once complete, the back is coated with latex and a secondary backing is applied to secure the loops or cut pile.
Are hand-tufted rugs as durable as hand-knotted rugs?
Hand-tufted rugs are durable for residential use and lighter commercial applications, though they typically have a shorter lifespan than hand-knotted pieces because the pile is held by a latex backing rather than individual knots. With proper care, a quality wool hand-tufted rug will last 10 to 20 years in normal residential use.
